Hive NYC Project Director Chris Lawrence has explored and theorized the art of the pop-up or hack jam through many channels. At Mozilla and Hive NYC, we increasing liken  events like The Summer Code Party as learning parties—with a mission. These temporary installations of making and exploration, pop-up in the strangest of places. It’s an exciting combination of user experience design, where the trick is to create an environment that speaks to audience interests—tumblr, remixing, learning something new, hanging out with friends, the innate desire for not only inspriration but free food and beats. It’s a multi-faceted vision, an aspirational dream that results in a different vibe, different constituency and different learning outcomes each time.

The Summer Code Party also marked the birth of The Hiveness (working title). The intrepid band of teens who will be working with HIve NYC HQ this summer. This is Zeinab, at 16 she is a seasoned learner/educator who has taught others to make and create using Hackasaurus. Check out her debut in the Mozilla Webmakers video. Wilson is another member of the growing team. He can fix or troubleshoot anything we hand him. He hasn’t met a Makerbot that he doesn’t like. The Hiveness took a lot of the pictures that you see featured here. They helped, hung out with friends, made stuff and went with the Hive NYC flow. Although the crowds were something intimidating, they still rocked it on the first day out! They’ll be visiting Hive NYC members and teaching workshops through August—so be on the look out.

People’s Production House’s Youth-driven Popsquad did an awesome job of showing people how to hack and recontextualize video using Popcorn Maker. Especially popular was the Paper Popcorn planning and storyboarding activity. Designed by People’s Production House New Media Coordinator, Anjum, this was a great way to get people thinking about how to use all of Popcorn Maker’s awesome possibilities with forethought.
